Start-up promises motor oil from animal fat

A Connecticut startup said it expects to deliver a car engine oil this month that is made without the typical multimillenium waiting period for fossils to become fuel.

Green Earth Technologies Inc. says it has found a way to make a substance chemically identical to crude oil from animal fat, a slaughterhouse byproduct this is typically discarded en masse.

The company is already using the process to make 2-cycle and 4-cycle engine oil, which is marketed as G-Oil.

The development of a potentially more sustainable motor oil, especially one that finds a good use for otherwise discarded materials, is really exciting.  A few questions sprang to my mind about it though:

Is the process used to make this motor oil truly earth-friendly?

As food prices rise, the demand for meat may decrease.  In this occurs, how will prices of animal fat oil be affected? Right now it’s cheaper than its main competitor, Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic oil, which retails at about $6.50.

What about vegans and vegetarians?  I’m sure at least a few of them will be offended by an animal-derived motor oil.  Are you a vegan or vegetarian?  What do you think about it?
