Time to talk turkey – and pheasant, and prairie chicken

Perhaps you've read stories and columns I've written in the past about the fall and rise of the wild turkey in Illinois. Perhaps you recall that the wild turkey was gone from Illinois by the early 1900s due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure. Perhaps you also know that conservation efforts brought the wild turkey back to Illinois, and that its population is large enough to allow a controlled hunting season each year.

End of story? Not really. There's a bigger story here, a tale of three large, beautiful Illinois birds and how each have met different fates in the prairie state.

This is a picture of a ring-necked pheasant, which was imported to Illinois from China.  Doesn't it have beautiful feathers?
