Schwarzenegger’s proposed veterinary tax irks pet lovers

This seems like a very bad idea that will lead to worse healthcare for animals who are already suffering (and whose saddened, cash-strapped, loving owners also suffer) because of the downturn in the economy:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is barking up the wrong tree again. He wants to raise millions by adding a tax on veterinary services.

On Nov. 6, Schwarzenegger announced a plan that would increase the sales tax in California to address the multibillion-dollar deficit in the budget, and proposed a "luxury" sales tax on veterinary services, furniture repair, auto repair and golf.

"We have drastic problems that require drastic and immediate action. We must stop the bleeding right now," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

In general, health-care services are not taxed. Whether you are getting plastic surgery or a root canal, no sales tax is applied.

What irks many pet lovers is that Schwarzenegger may believe that veterinary services are a luxury and not "essential." Others point out that pets are not a piece of property like furniture and should not be the object of taxes.

The proposal would add 9 percent sales tax to all veterinary services.

Auto repairs and veterinary services are now considered luxuries? Talk about absurd!
