Bug decline sparks food fears for other wildlife

The miserable summer has led to a decline in bugs, prompting concern for birds and other wildlife reliant on insects.

Wildlife conservation charity Buglife said dragonflies, ladybirds, bees, moths and mayflies have all been in short supply this summer because of the weather.

The insects are not only being washed away by the rain but can be killed off by the cool weather. Because bugs are cold-blooded creatures they need the warmth of the sun to raise body temperatures in order to forage for food.
