Critter Camp helps kids become animal advocates

When bloodhounds from Virginia K9 Rescue and Recovery showed up at Heritage Humane Society and tracked down a 13-year-old boy in the wooded area behind the animal shelter, there was no cause for alarm. Representatives from the rescue and recovery group were there as part of the shelter’s Critters Camp, a summer camp for children ages 7-10.

Critters Camp was created to teach children kindness and respect for companion animals in their homes and in the community. The weeklong camp, planned and run by Volunteer/Foster Manager Ruthann McDermott and volunteer Katherine Rahman, used hands-on activities, games, guest speakers and interaction with the shelter animals to teach campers the appropriate way to care for animals.
