Ten donkeys decorated for an annual competition in the southern village of Room near Jezzine raced a 100-meter course to the delight of a huge crowd on Sunday. But the festivities were interrupted by protesters decrying the abuse of donkeys during the race.
Members of the Animal Behavior Society protested against the violent treatment of the donkeys. Some riders snapped their donkeys to make them go faster, using sticks, hoses and other tools. Excited residents also poked the animals. A number of donkeys started bleeding.
"What is happening here is a crime," one protester said over a microphone.
