New book highlights animals facing extinction

During the planet's long history there have been several so-called "extinction events" when a large number species have perished.

[...] Now there is a growing consensus among scientists that a sixth extinction event has already begun with species disappearing at an unsurpassed rate.

It is possible that 1m species may not make it to the end of the century.

They range from the sub-Saharan elephant to the snow leopard which clings to life high in the mountains in sub-zero temperatures.

From ocean going leviathans such as the Bowhead whale down to the miniscule tadpole shrimp, all are at risk of disappearing forever,

A new book Going, Going, Gone? chronicles some of those most at risk.

Oh boy!  A new book for me to read!  Too bad it's going to be terrifically depressing. :(

More and more, I find it difficult to be optimistic about changing the rate we are losing species.  But we should never give up, even if it seems overwhelming.
