ANIMAL lovers need to be reassured that student training at The University of Queensland does not involve testing, research or experimentation.
Students perform surgery on animals that previously have been assessed by several agencies, including Brisbane City Council, the RSPCA or the animal welfare league, to be unsuitable for rehoming and are to be euthanised by the council. No research of any kind is done on animals that are used for teaching.
The veterinary profession prides itself on the humane treatment of animals. No other group in our community carries the responsibility of caring for the health and welfare of pets, farm animals and wildlife as do veterinarians. In fact, veterinarians are “the animal welfare professionals”. It is a responsibility that veterinarians take extremely seriously, often at a personal cost in time, emotion and hours worked.
