Keeping a deer as a pet is illegal in Florida

Deer may seem as if they’d make docile and friendly pets, but their behavior is as unpredictable as any other wild animal.

And keeping one as a pet actually is illegal and could cost up to a $500 fine and six months in jail, said Lt. Stan Kirkland with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

In the past year, five pet deer have turned up in neighborhoods and parks in Northwest Florida, wildlife authorities say.

It’s a practice that could present a serious danger to people.
