Ten dogs were euthanized at Pender County Animal Control in recent weeks after testing positive for Parvovirus, an extremely contagious virus among canines commonly called Parvo.
According to the Humane Society, summer heat and humidity creates the perfect breeding ground for the virus, which is often fatal for unvaccinated puppies. Several young adult dogs tested positive for Parvo at the shelter as well, which is unusual, said Kathy Lewins, executive director of the Topsail Humane Society .
Most outbreaks occur because owners haven’t vaccinated their puppies, Lewins said. Her organization took over the management of the Pender County facility a few weeks ago, at which time it began testing for the virus. The first case of Parvo appeared 2½ weeks ago. The staff responded by isolating the dog and disinfecting the area. But the virus has a seven- to 10-day incubation period, when the dog shows no signs of the illness but can be contagious.
