Animal activists criticize Puerto Rico government’s plans for long-awaited shelter

The battle between animal activists and the Puerto Rican government over the treatment of pets and the apparent lack of shelters is intensifying again.

This time the fight is delaying the long-awaited reopening of an animal shelter along the island's northern coast, a government official said Saturday.

Activists say the government will try to run the US$200,000 shelter like an animal control agency. But local officials say they cannot offer free services or promise a no-kill policy.

"The truth is, it's impossible to maintain an unlimited amount of animals because of a lack of space and high maintenance costs," said Hiram Cruz, director of the development office in the municipality of Arecibo.
