New Norwegian snail poses threat

Thousands of snails are crowding around two cabins in Sør-Trøndelag county, according to the daily newspaper Nationen. Initially it was thought that it was the harmful Iberia snail that had made its way to Selbu, but research shows that it is more likely to be the red forest snail.

This is the first time since the 1800's that the snail has been seen in Norway. However it is not a welcome guest.

"It would be best if the occurrence were stamped out. We don’t need more alien species in Norway and we don't want to take chances," says Øystein Størkersen of the Norwegian Directorate of Nature Management.
