Like the proverbial canary in the coal mine, penguins are sounding the alarm for potentially catastrophic changes in the world's oceans, and the culprit isn't only climate change, says a University of Washington conservation biologist.
Oil pollution, depletion of fisheries and rampant coastline development that threatens breeding habitat for many penguin species, along with Earth's warming climate, are leading to rapid population declines among penguins, said Dee Boersma, a University of Washington biology professor and an authority on the flightless birds.
"Penguins are among those species that show us that we are making fundamental changes to our world," she said. "The fate of all species is to go extinct, but there are some species that go extinct before their time and we are facing that possibility with some penguins."

They are dieing out there and I want to help save them. I like them a lot. They are the best animals in the WORLD.
I want to beable to donate money to help with the rescue of the penguins.
I want to say that I really love Penguins. My friends and I would like to do something in our area to help raise money to help rescue them. There are twelve of us and our names are Kiera, Christina, Katheran, Esmealda, James, Josalyn, Lorna, Julanna, Taylor, Justin and myself Jacob. We thought of having a rally at our school and getting the kids to donate and get motivated to help. If there is any way that you could give me some tips that would be great. We are all 3rd graders and really want to help but are not sure how to do it. I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you,
Jacob Penguins Rock!
Hi Jacob,
Your mom emailed me too, but I am so glad to hear from you! I will be happy to help you and your friends. I’m so proud of you for taking the initiative to help penguins.
How do you want me to contact you to assist with your project? I can email you or your mom, or we could create an online message board. We could also talk on the phone; sometimes that’s easier. But be careful not to write any of your personal information (like your email address or phone number) in a comment on KittyMowmow.com!
That’s how bad people sometimes find kids so they can bully them. Instead, email it to me at kittymowmowsanimalexpo@gmail.com. Also, you should only give me your contact information if your mom says you can.
Here’s what you should do next:
1. Get your friends together for an Official Meeting.
2. Brainstorm all your ideas of what you want to do and write them down. Write down where you want the rally to be held, when you want it to be, who would want to be there, and what you want to do at the rally. Also decide if you want to collect donations for a penguin-rescue organization or if you just want to educate your classmates on how you can help penguins or both.
3. Write down the name of each person or business you think might be able to help you. That might be your parents, your teachers, your principal, your local party-supply store, a nearby zoo, anything.
4. Write down any questions or problems you might have. Did you have trouble thinking of anything? Is there something you talked about that you didn’t understand? Write these down.
5. Now, you and your friends decide when and where you should meet for your next meeting.
6. Don’t forget to go home and read about penguins!
I think that’s all for now. Please contact me to let me know the answers to your questions. I can’t wait to hear from you! Good luck, and tell all your friends I said hi!
Thanks,
MJ Schindler, aka Kitty Mowmow
