State representative’s bill seeks to ban pit bulls across Ohio

A bill before Ohio’s House of Representatives seeks to ban pit bulls.

Ohio House Bill 568 was introduced by Rep. Tyrone Yates, of Cincinnati. The bill is considered overly harsh by some, allowing for seizure and euthanization of existing pit bulls and the prohibition of owning, keeping or harboring “a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.” The bill lumps pit bulls into a category of dogs it terms “dangerous.”

Vinton County Dog Warden Sheila Brooks estimated that about 30 percent of the county’s dogs are pit bulls or pit bull mixes.
