If you are going out of town, you probably are either taking your pet(s) with you, have a tried- and-true pet sitter or have your pets lined up to go to a good boarding facility.
If your pets are staying at home under with a good pet sitter or you are staying at home for your celebrations, remember that most dogs and cats and even livestock are scared of flashes and loud noises, which usually means a significant increase in lost pets right after the Fourth of July.
Spooked horses can run into fencing, injuring themselves, and loose livestock on a roadway is a severe accident waiting to happen for human and animal alike. Dogs and cats left outside may take off to escape the noises and end up lost in the process. If at all possible, bring your dogs and cats inside before any fireworks start, and keep them in until well after all of the flashes and bangs are finished for the evening. They may still be scared and go under a bed or to the darkest, quietest spot in the house, but at least they will be safe at home.
