Exactly 20 years after warning America about global warming, a top NASA scientist said the situation has gotten so bad that the world’s only hope is drastic action.
James Hansen told Congress on Monday that the world has long passed the “dangerous level” for greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and needs to get back to 1988 levels. He said Earth’s atmosphere can only stay this loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for a couple more decades without changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea level rises.
“We’re toast if we don’t get on a very different path,” Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute of Space Sciences who is sometimes called the godfather of global warming science, told The Associated Press. “This is the last chance.”

Hello reader,
This is Kitty Mowmow, the creator and author of this site, Kitty Mowmow’s Animal Expo. Everyday, when I attempt to dig through all the news in the world to find and bring to you the most important, most interesting news about animals, I read tons of articles about endangered species, threatened species, and species that will probably go extinct because of global warming, loss of habitat, and pollution.
You know what? I’m tired of reading about the loss of animal life that our lifestyles may have caused and may continue to cause (yes, there is some debate about how much of the change in climate is natural and how much is caused by humans, but it’s pretty obvious that we still need to reduce the amount of garbage we throw away and the amount of pollution we release if we want to keep the planet healthy).
Like many other people in the world, I want to help make things better so that the fascinating and beautiful plants and animals I see and touch and learn about everyday will still be around for my grandchildren to enjoy. I already recycle, and try to limit my consumption of disposable goods and my driving. But what else can I do? What can just one person do?
I’m not sure if it will work, but I’m going to start writing to members of congress, business leaders, and world leaders, in an attempt to let them know that these issues are important to the people who keep them in office and purchase their goods. I will suggest that we offer more support and funding for the research and development of sustainable energy sources, products, manufacturing and production. I’ll keep you updated on how things are going with the campaign. I’ll share the mailing addresses I use with you, so that you and everyone else can all join in this effort.
Let me know what you think about this, and what else you think I can do to help keep animal species (including Homo sapiens) alive and well.
-Kitty Mowmow
