Red Pandas found in Langtang National Park

The finding of Red Pandas within the Langtang National Park area has encouraged conservationists.

A team of conservationists led by lecturer Hari Prasad Sharma, department of zoology (TU), had recently found one Red Panda each in Chandanbari area of Rasuwa and Dhadepani area of Nuwakot. It is believed that the areas harbor around 100 Red Pandas. The areas lie at an altitude of 2,800 to 4,000 metres above sea level.

The mission was initiated by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation’s Himalayan Landscape Project supported by WWF.

The Langtang National Park said it was preparing a long-term conservation strategy to protect the Red Pandas by securing food and habitat for them so that internal and foreign tourists could be lured to the area and contribute to the living condition of the people living in the region.

What are the ways and means to protect red panda’s?(apart from donating)

That’s a good question. Here are a few ways to actively help save the red pandas from extinction:

    – Go to The Red Panda Project’s website, http://www.redpandanetwork.org/ and click on “Get Involved.” Among other things, you can “volunteer your time for various tasks related to the project, that include field research and monitoring.” Right now it doesn’t seem like they have any specific volunteer opportunities posted, but maybe if you check back frequently you will find some. The Red Panda Project apparently does a lot of different things to help the pandas (research, conservation, education), so maybe if you contact them they will find something for you to do.

    – If you live in the UK near the city of Birmingham, you could apply to volunteer at the Birmingham Nature Centre. Their website is http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/GenerateContent?CONTENT_ITEM_ID=2919&CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE=0&MENU_ID=1757 . They house many animals, including the red panda.

    – These organizations and other zoos give you the opportunity to “adopt” a red panda.

    – You could throw your own fundraiser for the Red Panda.

    – Here’s a project I found on WWF.org (go to http://www.panda.org/about_wwf/where_we_work/asia_pacific/where/china/wwf_china_conservation/qinling/project/index.cfm?uProjectID=IN0910 to find it) that takes place in Sikkim, India. The project’s objectives are to 1. Understand the conservation status of the red panda in Sikkim, 2. Strategise for long-term conservation of the red panda, and 3. Conduct feasibility for reintroductions of the red panda in order to create populations in identified sites. Maybe if you’re in the area you could help them somehow. I suppose it couldn’t hurt to contact them.

I hope this helps! Good luck helping the red pandas.

In a comment listed above, I mentioned some organizations that help the red
pandas by conserving their habitats, educating the public on the importance
of the red panda and how they can help it, and breeding red pandas in
captivity. I'm sure they are also doing other things, so you might want to
    check out their websites.
