Police officials want pets to be caged at LAX

Jet-setting pets might soon have to travel behind bars through Los Angeles International Airport.

The city council's Public Safety Committee passed an ordinance Monday that would require pet owners to keep their animals caged at the airport so they don't distract police dogs while they sniff for drugs and explosives.

Police dogs are trained to ignore other animals, but when another dog becomes aggressive, even the best-trained canines sometimes respond, said Police Chief William Bratton.

LAPD canine handlers have experienced "close calls" in which a domestic animal tried to pick a fight with an on-duty police dog, Bratton wrote in a report supporting the ordinance.
