Parents and children at Nadeen School, Adliya, are carrying out a campaign to make life better for abused and abandoned animals.

They are taking part in a month-long drive to raise funds and collect animal food and other goods for the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) sanctuary in Shakhura.

Last week was Dog Week, during which pupils and parents were asked to bring in food, blankets, pet toys and other items to help care for dogs being sheltered at the BSPCA.

This week was Cat Week. Next week will be the week for all other animals at the sanctuary.

Each junior class is also organising fundraisers, raising cash through bake sales. Grade five students have already raised BD122.850 through a bake sale.

"We are very pleased with the response from both the students and their families," said event co-ordinator Shanee Puri.

She said they launched the drive after reading in the GDN about a 12-week old puppy which was snatched and partially skinned by an intruder at the sanctuary.

"It was really shocking to read the news and we decided to encourage the children to collect things with their families," said Ms Puri.

"Through this campaign, they will learn a lot more about animals and how to show their love and affection by collecting good things for them."
