
A new animal welfare watchdog has been established to improve the monitoring of animal welfare and bolster public accountability at Victoria's three main zoos.
Yesterday's announcement of an Animal Welfare Peer Review Committee followed discussions between Zoos Victoria management and Environment Minister Gavin Jennings over allegations of abuse and mistreatment revealed in The Age last month.
Mr Jennings said the new committee — a direct response to issues raised by The Age — would report to the zoo's board on animal welfare and would investigate issues raised relating to the care of animals.
"The recent allegations over the treatment of some animals have highlighted the need for strengthened oversight of animal handling procedures and the need for improved advice to the board on these matters," Mr Jennings said.
