Spectators saw the beaver behaving strangely at about 1:25 p.m. in the area where beavers have built a dam. The beavers have been in the creek for a year.

"He looked kind of drunk or something; going from side to side bumping into things. He couldn't walk straight, he fell over on his side and he slid down the side of the dam," said Keven Ormiston, an employee at the Contra Costa County Community Development Department.

Ormiston, 52, said he ran back to his office and called the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department.

When he returned, the beaver was in the creek between the pedestrian bridge at the Amtrak station and the Marina Vista Street bridge, well past the dam. Ormiston said the beaver was swimming weakly on its side when its head dipped underwater and didn't come back up.

"I ran down the bridge and jumped in. I wasn't going to let him drown. I grabbed onto his tail and held on to him until animal services came," he said.
