An Asian shepherd is recovering after giving birth to 17 puppies last week by Caesarean section.
Seventeen puppies is an extraordinarily high number for a single litter, experts said.
Mother and her puppies were doing well. Like any other mother, she is protective of her puppies, barking whenever anyone comes near them.
The new mother's time is now consumed with feeding her newborn pups.

Wow, I heard of a Chihuahua whelping 7 pups, which is a lot, but this is unbelievable! Yes she will have a very hard time feeding them. I hope she get some help.
I looked up the world record, and found this article from 2005 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/norfolk/4189845.stm). Here’s an excerpt:
“A mastiff dog is set to break a world record after giving birth to a litter of 24 puppies.
“”Breeders Damian Ward and his girlfriend Anne Kellegher, from Manea, Cambs, had only been expecting two-year-old Tia to give birth to 10.
Unfortunately, four of the pups have now died, but the remaining pups – which are now seven weeks old – are thought to be worth about £1,000 each.”
There’s more information about this litter out there on the web.
I also hope these dogs had some help feeding their pups. I would think that if these owners would go to the time, effort and expense of arranging for the dogs to have c-sections, they would also be willing to take the time, effort, and expense to help nurse the puppies.
