So the year this year is 1984, and a word of warning; this list does not demonstrate a great deal of breadth. Sue me, I was 15 year old, I knew what I liked and liked what I knew. There is a cheat warning here - I've mentioned once longago that due to the fact that my sister liked them I didn't listen to the Smiths for about a year after this. Echo and the Bunnymen – Ocean Rain
I got my first record player of my own on the day that I bought this 12” single and ever since this has been the first thing I’ve played on any new music player that I’ve had. A song with lots of best bits from an album with lots of best bits – the laid back guitar intro, the all-bundle-in chorus and conclusion. A fine start.

This wasn’t, truth to tell, always the happiest of my teenage years but this song is a recollection of quite a happy little five minutes, sat in school, first day back as the big kids, gazing hopefully not too obviously at somebody I would quietly obsess over for most of the next two years and singing this to myself. Surely it’s not failure if you never even try?
