...The Humane Society of the United States set up an animal intake area at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, an event center in Gonzales, La., about an hour northwest of New Orleans, shortly after the hurricane. More than 10, 000 animals were rescued legally and brought to the center.
Volunteers took descriptions of the pets and where they would be taken in case their owners came back to look for them, Bender said. Pictures of missing pets were posted on Petfinder. com, a Web site that displays pictures and descriptions of adoptable pets. Volunteers also set up a telephone hotline for owners to find their missing animals, she said.
