A rare white rhino's skin in the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum has caused a stir among Humane Society Members.
The Humane Society of the United States wrote a letter on Nov. 19 to President Cecil O. Samuelson regarding the acquisition of a southern white rhino skin. The museum legally hired a hunter to go to South Africa and kill a white rhino at Mkuze National Park. The Humane Society raised a question of ethics as it said the university should not have allowed a rare mammal to be killed for a display.
Larry St. Clair, the museum director, said the intent of the rhino skin is to emphasize the importance of species preservation. The skin will be used for educational purposes. It will help museum visitors see a conservation effort that went right because of specific techniques and government action. The museum wants students to have the opportunity to see this rare rhino skin.
