This is sort of obvious: spend time with potential pets before you adopt them so that you won't have as many surprises. You'll know what you're getting into and will be more likely to choose the right one.
"If they're looking for a lap cat," says Ashe, "we can easily direct them toward cats that are predisposed to be lap cats versus are they looking for a more tightly bonded with one person kind of kitty who is going to hide when they have company but who is going to sleep in bed with you every night."
