A Houston pioneer in the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats aims to end massive euthanasia here

...Houston remains the nation's fourth-ranking city in a grim category. Nearly 80,000 dogs and cats — most of them healthy and docile — have to be killed each year by area animal control agencies and shelters because of lack of money, space and people willing to adopt them...

...A well-known Houston animal protection activist, Sean Hawkins, is spearheading an effort to end the slaughter by spaying and neutering at least 50,000 animals for each of the next five years. The goal of his organization, Saving Animals Across Borders, is to end euthanasia at animal shelters here by 2013. The program, called Fix Houston, will set up five clinics that will offer inexpensive spay-neuter procedures.
